How to Make 3-D Christmas Wall Art

source: Janel Piersma

Recently, I was strolling through the home decor aisles at Target when some Christmas wall art caught my eye. It was a large framed piece with a snowflake patterned background and a 3-D rectangle that read, “IT’S THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR.” Simple. Classic.

Even though it was on sale for $18 (down from $20), I didn’t put it in my cart for three reasons:

1. My family is living on a law school budget, so spending $18 on a piece of seasonal decor is just not something I feel comfortable doing.

2. We’re trying to live more simply. I have a hard time spending money on something that I’ll have to store for 11 months of the year.

3. I could make my own version — with my own choice of color and design — for FREE using stuff that I already had at home.

Decorating for Christmas doesn’t need to be expensive or time consuming. I was at a craft store a few weeks ago and spotted some adorable subway-art-like Christmas scrapbook paper. I picked up two sheets for $0.30 each.

Combined with an inexpensive frame from a yard sale or thrift store, the scrapbook paper came to life as Christmas art…within two minutes. The possibilities are endless for creating and customizing this easy framed art for your Christmas holiday decor!

101 Days of Christmas: Paper Star Tree Topper

November 10, 2012
Thumbnail image for 101 Days of Christmas: Paper Star Tree Topper

Our tree topper is actually a sweet cherub angel we’ve had since we got married that I won’t let my husband replace (no matter how tiny she looks on top of our 9′ Christmas tree!), but when I started making paper star ornaments back in September, I had a feeling that a big paper star [...]

Thumbnail image for 101 Days of Christmas: Fabric Scrap Wreath

This fabric scrap wreath turned out really cute, and it was a lot of fun to make too! To be honest, I was afraid it was going to turn out to be one of those craft projects I never finish because I don’t do particularly well with tedious, but I was actually able to finish [...]

I love crafty Christmas decor, not only because it can easily — and inexpensively — be updated as our styles change, but also because it adds a “handmade” touch to our home that really embodies the way we want to celebrate Christmas in our home. We love Christmas (like really, really love it), but we [...]

The following post is from Myra of My Blessed Life: One of my earliest childhood memories of Christmas anticipation is making a paper chain with my mom. We always used red and green construction paper and we made the number of rings correspond with the number of days until Christmas. This is something that my [...]

101 Days of Christmas: Paper Snowflakes

I love making paper snowflakes. There’s something magical about creating a design you can’t actually see and trying to picture how each cut will look when it’s finally unfolded. They never look quite like I expect, and — like the real things — each one is unique. My girls love to make them as well, and [...]

101 Days of Christmas: Sparkly Pears

Okay, so I have a bit of a thing for glitter! I first came across the idea of sparkly pears on the Pottery Barn website, and I even ordered a set on clearance last year…only to have my order canceled because they were out of stock. So I set out to make my own. And [...]

101 Days of Christmas: Grapevine Wreath

My original plan was to spray paint my grapevine wreath a dusty blue color to match our door mat, but when I started laying out my fabric flowers, I realized I liked it au naturel after all! With a big red bow and pretty layered flowers, this wreath is the perfect blend between simple and [...]
