101 Days of Christmas: Peppermint Chocolate Pretzel Treats

peppermint chocolate pretzel treats

To be honest, I find Christmas baking with my kids underfoot to be a bit stressful, especially when I’m trying to get a lot done very quickly; however, I loved Shaina’s tips for including kids in holiday baking. Another tip I would add to her list for is to choose easy recipes rather than one that has to be rolled or folded or decorated just so.

These peppermint chocolate pretzel treats are one of my very favorites for making with the girls. It helps to have some extra hands to help with unwrapping the Kisses and topping them with M&Ms anyway, and even our four-year-old could handle this one without any help (I’m sure our 2-year-old would have enjoyed helping too, but I was too afraid she would sneak a bite of these very-gluten, very-dairy treats and be in pain later!).

Ingredients:

  • square or shaped pretzels with a tight grid
  • Hershey Kisses, chocolate or peppermint
  • Christmas M&Ms

Directions:

Preheat oven to 170 degrees F.

On a baking stone or cookie sheet, lay out pretzels. Unwrap Kisses and place one in the center of each pretzel.

Note: If you’re doing a mix of Kisses, you’ll want to make them in separate batches because they’ll melt at different speeds.

Bake for 5-7 minutes. Your Kisses will be shiny and should be soft enough that the M&Ms sink into them easily when pressed on top. (If they’re not soft enough, they won’t stick to the pretzel on the bottom. But if you let them get to soft, they’ll puddle. The good news is they’ll still taste good either way!)

Pull them out of the oven and quickly begin pressing M&Ms into the top of each one. The Kisses will be slightly melted, so expect this part to be a little messy for little ones.

Let cool completely.

I think you just wrote about me! LOL! I have a long to do list everyday but there are things on there that I put on there on purpose. To give me something else to work towards when something seems so mundane and I need a change! Thanks for sharing! My procrastination is a problem sometimes but is getting better as I reach for my goals in life! :)

I love what you named it, “productive procrastination.” Perfect. I do that too. I also have a lot on my plate and sometimes I’m just better off walking away from something that’s wasting my time and coming back to it with a refreshed outlook. It’s actually a time-SAVER.

Laundry is mine productive procrastinator. If I know I have something I need to get done, but just can’t bring myself to do it. I go grab a basket of laundry to sit and fold.(There is always laundry at our house.)Plus it gives me a chance to sit down and rest while being “Productive”. Thanks for giving this a name.

You know, I never thought of it that way!! I guess I productively procrastinate all the time but just thought of it as procrastination from the “big things”.

    grocery lists
    meal plan
    scheduling
    to do lists
    wiping down the kitchen etc

I’ve also done this with Rolo candies and pecan halves to make “turtle” treats.

      Mmm, yum!

I saw something similar on Pinterest that used round pretzels, so the chocolate melted in a bit more, and they called them “reindeer noses”! Too cute. :)

But I like the idea of the minty kisses that you used…bet they’re delicious.

Hehe, that’s cute! We do like the peppermint flavored kisses…it’s really yummy!

These are my husband’s favorite, and the girls love to make them with me.  We’ve tried them all sorts of ways with different shaped pretzels and different flavored kisses and M&M’s (he likes the mint M&Ms!).  You can also try the peanut butter M&Ms, my favorite!

Ooh, peanut butter M&Ms with chocolate kisses sounds yummy!

These are awesome! I am getting ready to host a family fun night and looking for easy treats for the kids I will be adding these to the list.
