101 Days of Christmas: Muddy Buddies

My family was pretty excited when I mentioned that I was making chocolate-peanut butter Chex — also known as Muddy Buddies — for this post. It’s a favorite in our house but not something I make too often because it’s so addicting and we end up scarfing the whole batch down way too quickly.

But for Christmas? Yes, this definitely counts as a Christmas treat!

I didn’t have any dairy-free chocolate chips on hand this time, but since Chex cereal is already gluten-free, I’d love to try making a GFCF version with dairy-free chocolate and coconut oil (thankfully our two-year-old likes coconut because it’s our go-to alternative as a dairy-free butter substitute!). I know there are vegan butter alternatives as well, so one of those might work instead. Anyone ever tried it?

Supplies:

  • 9 cups Chex mix
  • 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
  • 12 cup peanut butter
  • 14 cup butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 12 cups powdered sugar

Directions:

Measure cereal into a large bowl.

In a smaller microwave-safe bowl — or in a small saucepan on the stove — melt chocolate chips, peanut butter and butter. In the microwave, start with 1 minute, stir and then repeat for an additional 30 seconds.

Add vanilla and stir well. Pour mixture over cereal, stirring until evenly coated.

Pour into 2-gallon resealable food-storage plastic bag and add powdered sugar, shaking until well coated.

Spread on waxed paper to cool, sprinkling with additional powdered sugar if needed, and then store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

LOVE this and I just found a variation with pretzels and M and M’s that I might make this year  SOO good.

We call this “puppy chow”, but I’ve never thought of it as a Christmas treat before.  Making me hungry….

    • http://lifeyourway.net Mandi @ Life Your Way

It’s only a Christmas treat because I refuse to make it any other time of year, LOL!

We call it Puppy Chow too…and I make it with Crispix cereal…and as far as I’m concerned, it’s a treat for ANYTIME!!  :)

Hmm, Crispix…what IS the difference between Crispix and Chex? Just the shape?

I’m planning on making a double batch, adding Christmas M&Ms once it cools, and bottling it in my empty Starbucks Frappuccino bottles and giving it as a treat along with gifts this year.  Easy and yummy!

What a great idea — I’ve been trying to think of something for my empty Starbucks bottles too!

Just a suggestion to save money and cleanup, pour the powdered sugar and the cereal into the cereal’s wax bag and shake it in there after you coat it with the chocolate mix. Then you don’t waste a ziploc bag.

LOVE this, Renee! I actually did mine in the glass bowl because I didn’t have any plastic bags, but it was a little bit rough because I was afraid to shake well and smash them up, so I wouldn’t recommend that. The cereal bag, though? Genius.

I grew up calling this “Puppy Chow”.  :)  Sometimes we will add M&M’s to the batch but it is very addicting!

I’ve heard it called that too. I’ve never seen it with M&Ms, but that sounds good!
