101 Days of Christmas: Salt Dough Ornaments

These salt dough ornaments are fun and easy for kids or adults. We used teeny tiny cookie cutters to make little ornaments, but you could make larger ornaments as well.

Ingredients:

  • 12 cup table salt
  • 12 cup water
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • latex gloves (optional)

Directions:

Use a mixer to combine all ingredients until you have a sticky dough, making sure all of the flour is mixed in well.

Kneed the dough on a well floured surface until you have a pliable dough, about 10 minutes. You may want to wear gloves because the dough can be drying on your hands.

Roll out the dough to 1/4″ thickness and use cookie cutters to cut out your shapes.

Use a toothpick to add a hole at the top of each ornament.

Lay the ornaments out to dry, flipping occasionally. (Note: Some recipes recommend baking them for 1-2 hours in a 200 degree F oven, but ours air dried just fine over a couple of days.)

You will have to work quickly with the dough, keeping any extra wrapped in plastic wrap, because it dries out fairly quickly.

Variations:

  • Add glitter to your dough for sparkly ornaments. Be careful not to add too much since they might not dry properly if the ratios are off.
  • Press beads and other embellishments into your shapes before drying them.
  • Once dry, paint your ornaments with regular paint or glitter paint.

I like the teeny tiny cookie cutter ornaments! I have a set of the teeny guys, but rarely use them since who wants to eat a cookie that small? :) But they would be perfect for ornaments like that.

Omigosh, those are too cute.  We have been summoned to my MIL’s for Christmas this year.  This would be something cute to make either here and take with us or there and let her putter around her huge kitchen and help. :O)

Hehe, sounds like a good plan!

You can also put them in the microwave to “bake” them 1 minute at a time and it only takes about 2-4 min total. But be careful because they are HOT!!

Good to know — thanks, Alex!

This was a Christmas tradition growing up – but we made them 3d and stuck paper clips in them before baking as hooks. After they were baked and cooled we’d paint them. They weren’t always the prettiest when they were done, but my mom’s tree sure is full of memories!

What a great tradition, Jennie — I love it!
